About The Club
The Geordie Grandslammers was first discussed as a result of the launch of Pride in Tennis and the aim to open tennis across the country to LGBTQ+ people. LGBTQ+ tennis spaces and clubs already existed in London, Manchester, Brighton and Cardiff and we wanted to bring this movement to the North-East. The Geordie Grandslammers became a reality in August 2022 after gaining lots of interest at Northern Pride that year. We strive to be as inclusive a space as possible and break down all the barriers that we can, whether they are gender, sexuality, race, disability and cost. We encourage people to let us know about these barriers so we can help to overcome them so more people can start to enjoy tennis in the region.
As the North East’s only LGBTQ+ tennis club, the Geordie Grandslammers is an all-inclusive club which welcomes all tennis abilities, regardless of age, sexual orientation, gender identity, sex, race, religion or nationality. The club plays on Sunday evenings at the Northumberland Club in Jesmond. Sessions run between 5.30-7.30pm. Sessions cost £5.50 during coaching weeks and when the session is centred around social play.
For the first three Sundays of the month, we split our two-hour sessions into one hour of coaching and one hour of social play. The final Sunday of the month is set aside for a fun tournament week, where members get the chance to bring out their competitive nature by going head-to-head with each other.
Although the tournament weeks are more structured, they are centred around fun and provide a good opportunity to mix with new members and get to know people a bit better. At the end of our sessions, we usually move indoors to the club bar to enjoy a much-deserved refreshment (and snacks!).
